Once upon a time, a crow felt deeply unhappy with his life. Sitting on a tree, he shed tears of sorrow. A monk resting beneath the tree noticed a tear drop on his cheek. Looking up, he saw the crying crow and asked, "Why are you so sad?"
The crow sighed, "Oh wise one, I am miserable. No one loves me. People shoo me away, and I struggle to find food. Everyone hates me. Life feels unbearable."
Filled with compassion, the monk advised, "Happiness comes from within, not from external conditions." But the crow could not understand and kept crying.
The monk then said, "If you could become any bird, what would you choose? I will grant your wish."
Overjoyed, the crow replied, "Please, make me a swan!"
The monk nodded. "Before I do, visit a swan and ask if he is happy."
The crow eagerly flew to a swan swimming peacefully in a pond. "You are so beautiful and white as milk. You must be the happiest bird in the world!"
The swan sighed, "Not really. My white color is dull. I envy the vibrant parrot. Surely, he must be the happiest."
So, the crow found a parrot. "Oh parrot, your bright colors must make you the happiest bird!"
The parrot replied, "Not at all. People keep me in cages. I long for freedom. Perhaps the peacock is truly happy."
Excited, the crow flew to a zoo where a magnificent peacock was surrounded by admirers. Once the crowd left, the crow asked, "Peacock, you are so beautiful. People admire you. You must be the happiest bird!"
The peacock sighed, "I always thought so, but because of my beauty, I am trapped in this zoo. People pluck my feathers for decorations, and I long for the freedom you have. You, crow, are the only bird that is never caged. I wish I were a crow."
Stunned, the crow returned to the monk, realizing the value of his own life. "Oh wise one, I no longer wish to be anyone else. I am happy as I am."
The Lesson:
In life, we often compare ourselves to others and feel dissatisfied. We focus on what we lack rather than appreciating what we have. This leads to endless unhappiness.
There will always be someone with more or less than you. True happiness comes from contentment. If you constantly compare, you will never be at peace. The happiest people are those who embrace their own lives.
So, don’t compare yourself to anyone. Your uniqueness is your greatest gift.
